Philadelphia Eagles rookie wideout DeVonta Smith etched his name into the team’s record book on January 8th, 2022 during the regular-season finale against the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field.
Smith, the 10th overall pick in the 2021 draft, pushed past longtime Eagles wideout DeSean Jackson’s franchise rookie record during the NFC East battle, catching three passes for 41 yards through a quarter of action.
Jackson produced 912 receiving yards as a rookie in 2008, but Smith topped that mark by collecting 916 receiving yards in 17 games during the first year of the expanded season.
The NFL moved to a 17-game season in 2021, so Smith was able to add to his total in the finale against the Dallas Cowboys. However, Smith’s new franchise mark will be set outside the timeframe of Jackson’s previous record.
The Eagles traded up from the 12th overall pick to the 10th overall pick to land, Heisman winner, Smith in April of 2021. The Eagles traded a third-round pick — acquired in the offseason trade with the Indianapolis Colts for QB Carson Wentz — to the Cowboys to leap the New York Giants at No. 11 and take Smith.
Smith led the Eagles with 64 catches for 916 yards and five touchdowns in 2021. He was the first Eagles wideout to top 900 receiving yards since Jordan Matthews produced 997 yards in 2015.
